A new diagnosis raises an awkward question: who needs to know? Your partner, probably. Your employer, maybe. Parents, friends, children, colleagues, the person you have just started seeing — it depends, and no rule says you must tell anyone.

Disclosure is a tool. Used well, it gets you adjustments, understanding and less pretending. Used with the wrong people, it invites unhelpful opinions. The decision is yours each time, and you can make it differently for different people.

What you say matters more than whether you say it. "I have ADHD" leaves people to fill in the gaps with whatever they think ADHD is. "I have ADHD, which means X, so it helps if Y" tells them what to do with it.
